Literacy Groups at West Elementary

Literacy groups are a key element to the success of the students at Mill Creek West Elementary.  All students are exposed to ninety minutes of core, Language Arts instruction with their classroom teacher every day.  Then, in addition to the ninety minutes, students are also provided with thirty minutes of small group instruction in the area of literacy.

That thirty minute block is called literacy groups.  Students are grouped by reading level and placed in groups of three to six students.  Three literacy assistants and a reading coach assist the classroom teacher during literacy group time so that each classroom has five instructors available to children.

During the literacy group, teachers and instructors provide literacy instruction in the "Big 5"; Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.

Because of these literacy groups and the hard work of classroom teachers, the percentage of students considered "on-track" is nearly 90% in all grade levels.
